Kingfishers at Landsberg am Lech: A High-Frequency Feeding Site

I visited in May 2026 a great kingfisher hide at a managed fishery near Landsberg am Lech, with two breeding pairs returning roughly every 20 minutes to feed their young birds. Complemented by additional wildlife including pine marten and grass snakes.

Spring in Slovenia

In May 2026, I photographed a diverse range of bird species in Slovenia’s Kog region, working from hides in a lush spring landscape with challenging light conditions. The trip combined rewarding behavioral observations, especially of Eurasian Hoopoes and Common Cuckoos, with varied shooting setups and an additional stop featuring waterbirds and woodland species.

In the Realm of Owls: Slovenian Forests in Spring

Tracking owls through Slovenia’s remote mountain forests led to intimate wildlife encounters, highlighted by a Ural Owl falling asleep in front of the camera. Despite missing some target species, the trip delivered memorable observations and valuable lessons on photographing in low-light forest conditions.

In mid-May 2026, I spent four days in Seewinkel photographing a rich wetland bird community, from reed warblers and waders to raptors, with early morning sessions offering the best light. Highlights included active cuckoos, abundant shrikes and stonechats, and evening observations of hunting Short-eared Owls, despite often challenging distances.

Three Winter Days with Golden Eagles in the Hohe Tauern near Mittersill

In February 2026, I spent three days in a winter hide in the Hohe Tauern, photographing golden eagles in a remote alpine setting where patience and changing conditions shaped each encounter. Highlights included close feeding scenes, dramatic interactions with other raptors, and challenging shooting conditions in snow and low light.

Winter RAPTORS in the HORToBagy Puszta

A winter photography trip to Hungary’s Hortobágy Puszta in January 2026 revealed exceptional raptor activity, with large numbers of White‑tailed Eagles and dynamic interactions in a snow‑covered steppe landscape. Highlights included intense eagle behavior at hides, dramatic Saker Falcon hunting actions, and a technical challenge shaped by low light and close‑range action.

Winter Arrival Road Trip: Birding from the Inn Valley to Lake Constance

A late November 2025 road trip followed the first winter onset across birding sites from the Inn valley to Lake Constance and back via Chiemsee, combining rivers, wetlands, and lake habitats. The highlight was the high diversity of wintering waterbirds at the Bodensee, complemented by a notable observation of a fishing European Robin in Gaisau.
